The Roots of a Star: Inside Song Kang’s Early Life and Childhood

Before he was crowned the undisputed “Son of Netflix” and set hearts fluttering across global screens in hits like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just an ordinary boy growing up in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.

While millions now know him for his striking visuals and emotive acting, his journey from a quiet kid with big daydreams to a pan-Asian superstar is rooted in a surprisingly grounded, athletic, and artistic upbringing.

An Athletic and Artistic Household

Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up in a tight-knit family of four, consisting of his parents and a younger brother born in 1998. Athleticism and discipline ran deep in his bloodline. His father was a former artistic gymnast, and his grandfather was a wrestler, meaning the men of the household possessed a natural inclination toward physical fitness.

However, balance was brought to the home by his mother, who worked as a piano teacher. Because of her profession, music was woven into Song Kang’s early daily life. He was introduced to the piano at a young age and even won several awards in elementary school piano competitions. Though he playfully admitted that he practiced somewhat under duress as a kid—leading him to take a long break from the keyboard—his foundational musical training quietly laid the groundwork for the discipline required in his future artistic career (and even came in handy for onscreen roles requiring musical prowess).

From Architectural Dreams to Cinematic Aspirations

As a child, acting wasn’t actually on Song Kang’s radar. Growing up, he was a creative thinker with entirely different career aspirations. After flipping through magazines and seeing striking, well-designed spaces, a young Song Kang fiercely wanted to become an architect or a furniture designer.

Ultimately, he shelved those blueprints because, by his own admission, he had “no idea where he needed to start”. Instead, the trajectory of his life shifted dramatically during his late teens. Inspired by watching Hollywood icon Leonardo DiCaprio—whose intense, expressive gazes and cinematic depth left a profound impression on him—Song Kang realized he wanted to evoke those same powerful emotions in others. He set his sights squarely on the screen, enrolling in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University to master his craft.

The Reluctant Idol and School Days

Given his towering height and striking, sharp features, it comes as little surprise that talent scouts took notice early on. Long before his official acting debut, Song Kang was approached multiple times by K-pop idol agencies hoping to train him as a singer and dancer.

He turned them all down. His heart was entirely set on acting, and he refused to let distractions pull him away from his chosen path.

Reflecting his everyday school days, Song Kang was a regular teenager who experienced his fair share of adolescent shyness. In interviews, he has chuckled about a high school crush that lasted two or three months—a romance that never actually materialized because he was simply too shy to ask her out.

Building the Foundation

The eclectic mix of hobbies from his youth—ranging from hammering away at the piano to staying active—morphed into a fierce work ethic. Long before he bulked up or slimmed down for demanding television roles, the habits instilled by his gymnast father ensured that staying physically active was second nature.
