Before the Fame: The Making of Song Kang
Long before he earned the title “Son of Netflix” and captured millions of hearts in series like Love Alarm, Sweet Home, and My Demon, Song Kang was simply an ordinary student searching for his path in life. Today, his striking visuals and screen presence make stardom seem inevitable, but his journey to the screen was marked by late starts, quiet discipline, and pivotal choices.
Early Life & Family Roots
Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, Song Kang grew up in an artistic yet structured home alongside his parents and younger brother. Discipline and creativity were woven into his daily life early on:
- His Father: An artistic gymnast, who instilled a strong physical work ethic and love for sports.
- His Mother: A piano teacher, who introduced music and performance into the household.
Despite these creative influences, Song Kang was not a child star. Throughout his years at Songpa Middle School and Changhyun High School, he lived a quiet life without clear ambitions for the entertainment industry.
The Turning Point: Finding Inspiration
After graduating high school, Song Kang felt uncertain about his future while his peers transitioned into college or careers. That trajectory shifted dramatically when he watched Leonardo DiCaprio’s captivating performance in the classic film Titanic. Inspired by how an actor could evoke such powerful emotions on screen, he decided to pursue acting seriously.

Rejecting Idol Castings for Acting
During his university years and training period, Song Kang’s sharp visuals caught the attention of multiple talent recruiters. K-pop talent scouts approached him repeatedly with offers to train as an idol.
Choosing His Own Way: Despite the quick path to fame that K-pop idol training often promised, Song Kang turned down every offer. He was determined to hone his craft strictly as an actor rather than a music performer.
He devoted his early 20s to rigorous training—taking ballet lessons, studying drama, and earning his degree in Film Arts from Konkuk University. His dedication paid off when he joined Namoo Actors and officially debuted in 2017. From minor roles and variety show hosting, his steady preparation paved the way for his rapid rise to global stardom.
