Johannes Pietsch, widely known by his stage name JJ, is an Austrian singer and songwriter who captured international acclaim by winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. Fusing classical operatic training with modern pop sensibilities, Pietsch has carved out a unique space for himself in the contemporary music landscape, making history along the way.

Early Life and Musical Roots

Born on April 29, 2001, in Vienna, Austria, to an Austrian father and a Filipino mother, Pietsch spent a significant portion of his formative years growing up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This multicultural background exposed him to diverse artistic influences early on. While family karaoke parties introduced him to the vibrant world of mainstream pop, his father fostered an appreciation for classical music and opera.

In 2016, Pietsch and his family moved back to Vienna. Immersing himself fully in formal musical education, he attended the prestigious opera school of the Vienna State Opera and later pursued his studies at the Music and Arts Private University of the City of Vienna. As a sopranist—utilizing a soprano-range countertenor technique—he developed an extraordinary vocal range capable of hitting striking high notes with intense emotional resonance.

Rise to Prominence and Television Beginnings

Before his massive breakthrough, Pietsch tested his talents on various competitive stages. In 2020, he appeared on the ninth series of The Voice UK, where he advanced to the knockout rounds under the mentorship of will.i.am. The following year, he competed in the fifth season of the Austrian talent show Starmania, reaching the final stage. These early television appearances helped hone his stage presence and introduced him to broader audiences.

Eurovision Victory and “Wasted Love”

The defining moment of Pietsch’s career arrived in early 2025. On January 30, 2025, the Austrian broadcaster ORF announced that JJ would represent Austria at the 69th Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Wasted Love,” which he co-wrote alongside Austrian singer Teodora Špirić and producer Thomas Thurner.

Performed under his stage name JJ, “Wasted Love” served as a powerful showcase of his genre-blending style, seamlessly marrying theatrical opera with driving pop beats. On May 17, 2025, at the grand final, Pietsch secured a historic victory for Austria, accumulating a total of 436 points—dominating the jury vote with 258 points and pulling a strong 178 points from the televote.

His victory broke several records: he became the first Eurovision winner of Southeast Asian descent, as well as the first solo champion born in the 21st century.

Post-Eurovision Success and Artistic Direction

Following his Eurovision triumph, Pietsch’s career accelerated rapidly. He expanded his discography, releasing music under Manifester Music and Warner Music Germany, including his debut EP. His collaborative work also earned high praise, including fan-voted accolades at the Eurovision Awards for his standout vocals and a memorable mashup of “Wasted Love” with Conchita Wurst’s iconic “Rise Like a Phoenix”.

Outside of his musical output, Pietsch is recognized for using his platform to speak openly about his identity. As an artist who identifies as queer, he has expressed a desire to be a supportive voice for the LGBTQ+ community.

With a dynamic vocal range, a boundary-pushing sound that bridges centuries of musical tradition, and a rapidly expanding global fanbase, Johannes Pietsch has firmly transitioned from a classical student in Vienna to a trailblazing modern pop icon.
